Road Rage: Aggressive Driving and Collisions

When we become furious, our judgement becomes impaired. We will do and say things that we later regret. When this happens while driving, particularly at speed, our anger distracts us from paying attention fully. It takes only seconds of distraction to go off the road, collide with a vehicle that stops suddenly, to drift from one lane to another or to ignore a stop sign.

It is estimated that two-thirds of all traffic fatalities occurred in collisions where aggressive driving played a major role. It is for this reason that "road accident" is an inappropriate term to describe the collisions that occur on roads between vehicles or vehicles and other objects. They do not happen accidentally!

Most readers of these notes will be able to recall having seen an outraged driver within the last month. If all these aggressive drivers could be identified and their attitudes changed about driving then we could dramatically reduce the tremendous toll that their driving takes on society. However, in order to understand why these high scorers take the daily risks they do, we have to understand their anger.
