What is Time Line TherapyŽ?

Time Line TherapyŽ is a collection of techniques that allow you to gain emotional control over your life. Inappropriate emotional reactions, such as bursts of anger, periods of apathy, depression, sadness, anxiety, and chronic fear, are responsible for preventing people from achieving the quality of life they desire. Limiting decisions, such as "I'm not good enough," "I'll never be rich," or "I don't deserve a great marriage," create false limitations and hamper your ability to create reachable and attainable goals and outcomes. Created by Dr. Tad James, Time Line TherapyŽ techniques enable you to eliminate many types of issues in your past, thus allowing you to move forward toward your goals and desires.

Your Time Line

People have a way of knowing inside them exactly how the past and exactly how the future is stored. That is to say, at the level of the Unconscious Mind, you have an organisation of all of the memories. You know the difference between something that happened last week and a happy memory from, say when you were 12 years old. The question is how do you know the difference. Well, the answer is that your unconscious mind somehow encodes those memories so that you know the difference between the two, and that’s what is called the Time Line. The Time Line doesn’t have to be linear, it could be more spatial. It doesn’t have to be a straight line, it could be a curved line. It doesn’t even have to be a line, it could be lump or a flowing river over a plain. There are limitless possibilities and however you do the Time Line is perfect.

How do you discover how you do your Time Line? What is the First Event which is the cause of your current condition? How can we delete a negative emotion, e.g. anger, sadness, fear, hurt and guilt?

Consider this for a moment:

Now it’s important that you remember when we talk about negative emotions that they're not necessarily bad. All emotions are good, but some get in the way of us being the totally magnificent human beings that we can be, that we know we are inside. Some emotions keep us from expressing things how we’d like to. Some emotions keep us from having all the things that we want. That’s what is meant by negative emotions - emotions that don’t feel good in the body. When you get angry, do you say that feels great and you’ll go and get some more! Last time you were sad, did you say that feels great and I’ll turn up the sadness! No, you didn’t say that. Did you welcome guilt? No.

Negative emotions just don’t feel good in the body. They tell us we have been offended in some way. Usually it’s our values that have been offended. The problem with negative emotions is that they are stored in the body. They are stored physiologically. What happens is that they have the possibility of blocking the flow of energy and information through the neural-network pathways. This blocking has a direct causal effect in dis-ease. What would happen if you could be free of all of those causes? Contrast the days when you had lots of energy to get out of bed in the morning and those days when you could hardly crawl above the sheets! Negative emotions take energy. They take energy in themselves and they take energy to repress in the body. They are not good for the body. That’s why in Time Line TherapyŽ there is an emphasis on clearing out all negative emotions. This does not mean that you cannot experience them again in the future if you need to. If you need to be angry again in the future, you will be able to. Any negative emotion will be available to you, if you need them.

How do you remove a limiting decision? A limiting decision can be removed using Time Line TherapyŽ. What kind of limiting decisions? How about the limiting decision that it’s not OK for me to make a lot of money? How about the limiting decision that I don’t deserve to have abundance in my life? Simply clearing your limiting decisions can typically double your income within a year, particularly if you are in sales. Have you ever decided that you’re not attractive enough, that you’re body doesn’t look right, that it’s not perfectly OK for you to have a relationship that works, that it’s not OK for you to feel good about yourself or that you should be miserable. How do you remember to do that? Was there ever a time when you didn’t or when you weren’t? When did you make that limiting decision? What if you could go back and eliminate that limiting decision and re-evaluate all the events between then and now? You could lose behaviour that doesn’t support you, that doesn’t support your happiness. Removing a limiting decision is a very important technique in Time Line TherapyŽ.

How your Time Line is organised in relation to your body has a major effect on your personality. Changing the direction and location of the Time Line is a method available in therapy to effect a change in your personality to eliminate unwanted behaviour. Time Line TherapyŽ is not so much about categorising personality, but about effecting change, especially in relation to a person’s ability to organise their lives and on their perception of life and things in life.
